„Too much asked, too little offered. If you are attacked, you are at war. We have been attacked,” said Carney on Saturday, adding that the United States and Canada are now in a trade war with each other.
Carney confirmed that Canada will retaliate dollar for dollar from September 8 against American tariffs, including those on steel, dairy products, household appliances, and electronics. The prime minister said that Canada is „reluctantly” implementing countermeasures for its own protection, with details to be announced in the coming days.
US President Donald Trump has not yet commented on the matter.
Earlier in the week, both countries were optimistic about reaching a deal. The United States postponed the implementation of a 50% tariff on Canada for three days, but the talks broke down on Friday after both sides accused each other of last-minute changes to their plans.
Canada is now facing 50% American tariffs on many goods, in addition to the US tariffs already imposed on Canadian steel, aluminum, and vehicles.
The tariffs are a key element of Trump’s trade policy, which he explains as boosting American manufacturing and creating jobs in the country. Critics of the economic policy, however, argue that the tariffs have raised prices in the United States and caused significant damage to the global economy.
